Email Offers are more important than you think!

In the midst of the confusion about making money online...marketing guru and creator of Squidoo.com, Seth Godin created the book "Permission Marketing".

In summary it said that TV commercials, billboards and popup ads simply interrupt people and don't cause them to buy online. Instead, to be more effective online, you must secure the permission to send ads (or messages or stories) to your potential clients.

In technical terms, this means to put up a Feedburner account (Blogger's Subscribe by Email) or use an email catcher (or opt in box) run by an Autoresponder.

The technical aspect will be handled by the upcoming Social Mentoring Club tutorials so you don't have to think about those.

What you need to think about is, you need to apply what Seth is saying. Not because he says it but because it actually works.

But who believes in this?

Not the big brands.

Pepsi, Starbucks, Amazon.

Local big brands like Jollibee, Bench, San Miguel

They all DO NOT PRACTICE THIS.

Why?

They're still in the interruption business.  Not that it's bad. It works. If you see a commercial a hundred times you tend to memorize it, right? So when you're in the store, you tend to buy what you know. Correct?

So they don't know the email addresses of their clients.

They don't need to, they can just create a P 1.5Million TV ad to advertise their wares and events.

They can hire crews to Flash Mob (see video below) to create buzz and interest.

If you can do these, then you do not need permission marketing.

But if you're a world class speaker, online marketer, direct marketer or Preacher (!) --yes you do need this.

You need to follow Seth Godin's observation (you see, people have been doing this before he made the book).  Specially if your marketing budget is near than hundreds and not millions of pesos.

Here are the even more examples of non-internet marketing personalities with correct email offers - which are indicated by 3 red arrows and surrounded by a red rectangle.   Analyze where they put the email offer or the opt-in box or the email catcher in their blogs.

1. Joel Osteen (protestant preacher)

2. Flowtown.com - a site that creates infographics used everywhere online.

3. John Grisham - the legal thriller novelist.

4. See how consistent Joel Osteen is, he's pastor to the Lakewood Church (we sing a lot of their songs in the Kerygma Feast). Here's the website of Lakewood

5. Tim Ferris's Four Hour Blog: Just this example alone should convince you that this is how marketing should be done.

6.  Good.com, a blog.

7. Wine Seller, Video Blogger and Social Media expert Gary Vee has a "VEE IP" list.

8. Lots of Online Marketers use an HTML5 Popup or simply a popup. It appears (annoyingly) before you access the contents of the website, imploring or attracting you to enter an email address to access something valuable inside the site.

9. Social Media Examiner, a social media blog has an email catcher. And you should too! It's competitor, AllFacebook.com doesn't - and simply relies on people's LIKES.

You should be smart not to rely on Facebook alone. Why? Because once facebook goes down (and it may), you want to be able to access your prospects and clients directly.

Now last time I gave you 13 examples, this time 9 examples - with context (you can see the whole website). What do you notice regarding the position of the email catchers?

Up

Down

Left

Right

They're all over the place!

Who do you think is doing it correct?

Generally the answer is "It depends if they have TESTED the results of placing the email catcher in their website".

Yes testing will tell you what's the best place, for the best results.

Joel Osteen has a long strip but also has 3 different areas that invite people for their emails. See if you can find the repetition. In the screenshot below it's NOT indicated by the arrows.

Instead it's everytime you see a HORSE.

Joel knows what he wants and he wants you to enter your email address. Among all the examples, I think he has the most effective marketing of them all.

That's why Joel runs that largest non-Catholic church in the USA, Lakewood.

Jomar, how come it looks like a COLISEUM? Because it is!

When you create an email list (which is why there's an email offer using an email catcher), you need to know that the relationship with the list is super super critical to your success. It's not just an email address. You have to care for that person behind the email. Enable the person, inspire and yes, entertain him at the same time.

That's the new commerce. That's the new online marketing for you.

And in case you find Joel Osteen's story a bit familiar is because Bo Sanchez does the exact same thing! Trivia: We patterned Bo's first personal site from Joel's personal site back in 2007.

Now you know.

Starting point

Position the email catcher (and the offer) on the Upper Left side of the Blog, just like in Gary Vee Joel Osteen and Jomar Hilario's example.  (You've seen my blog yes???)

Do it for a month, reposition for Lower Right side of the blog, and do it for a month.

Compare the results.

Stick with the best results.

Now go and re-create your blog to have a great Email Offer and position and color it correctly!
That's your assignment.

Jomar Hilario

P.S. Your assignment is to create a blog or re-do your blog (in blogger.com) that positions the Follow by Email Gadget on the Upper Left side.
